Joel Clarke, 27, of 57 Leopold Street, was yesterday denied his pre-trial, after he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, yesterday, charged with robbing Jermaine Ross of $16,000 and two cellular phones.
He allegedly committed the offence on October 8. He pleaded not guilty.
Clarke said that he is a porkknocker and knew nothing about Ross’s allegation. But Ross said that he was walking when he saw Clarke with a piece of wood in his hand and he was even forced to comment on the piece of wood.
He said that he told Clarke that he could probably use it to “beat the man” who stole his bike. As he was attempting to turn away the man dealt him a blow to his head and he became unconscious, he said.
He said that eyewitnesses saw Clarke going through his pockets while he was on the ground.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews said that bail should be denied because; the accused was granted bail on a similar offence and did not return to court. The prosecutor also stated that an arrest warrant was issued for the defendant and he still did not show up.
The defendant Clarke refuted this claim and told the court that he returned but the matter was never called.
Bail was denied and the matter is to reconvene on October 31, 2008.
Also appearing before the said magistrate was Neville Mahase, who was given the alternative of paying a $15,000 fine, or serving nine months behind bars.
It is alleged that on October 15, at Regent Street, he stole one pair of shoes from Renita Glen valued $4,000.He pleaded guilty to the charge.
The defendant told the court that he was picking up garbage at the back of the woman’s stall and that he did not know that the shoes were still in the box.
He said that it was only after he attempted to empty the box that the shoe fell out and he came up with the idea that he could sell it. He said that he sold the pair of shoes for $500 to a woman at Bourda Market.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews, told the court that on the day of the crime the woman left her niece to look at the stall.
He continued that at about 15:30 hrs all the shoes were packed when Mahase picked up the shoes and ran away.
The court heard that the woman’s niece gave the police a good description of the man who was later picked up and told of the offence.
