Finding himself in an unfamiliar position of trailing with one Race Meeting to go, before the end of the season, 2007 champion Mark Vieira vowed to destroy all and sundry come November 2, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Vieira, the consummate professional has not been happy all year with the performance of his Mazda RX 7 and even opted out of the July Meeting due to his lack of confidence of doing well and his decision not to compete was met with mixed reactions by fellow competitors.
Ultimately what it did, however, was send an urgent signal to his sponsors that for him to remain competitive in the sport, they needed an upgrade in machine and the next thing we saw was the acquisition of the space-framed Mazda RX 8 which he referred to as the best car in the Caribbean.
“It was a case of the old car not being able to sustain anymore modification so we had to think about getting one that could compete with the other cars in the division most of which were built specifically for racing.”
The straight talking driver opined that he should to be able to go at least 1.5 seconds quicker than the former car, adding that that ought to be enough to allow him to keep ahead of the opposition.
Responding to whether the late arrival might hamper preparations and leave little time for him to adjust to the handling and other important aspects of ensuring that he gets maximum performance from the car, the local speedster said that he is confident that he will be ready come race day.
“Seat time is not that important and I feel that the team will be ready in time for the Meeting,” Vieira disclosed.
Vieira lies second in the national points standing on 18 points which leaves him 17 adrift of leader Andrew King, while Kevin Jeffrey is just 2 points away in third place.
