Errol Tiwari and Ronuel Greenidge ended on 7 points apiece, but Greenidge was adjudged overall winner after the tie breaker rule was employed, on the final day of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Nationals qualifier at the Locus Room, Tower Hotel, last evening.
Loris Nathoo also benefited from the tie breaker rule after he finished on 6 1/2 points, the same as David Khan. The other players qualifying for the National Championships are Dennis Dillon (6 points), Frankie Farley (5 1/2 points) and Omar Shariff (5 1/2 points).
Taffin Khan continued his dominance and ended with 9 points to comfortably claim the junior’s championships. His nearest opposition, Cecil Cox scored 7 points, while Khalid Gajraj amassed 6 points to occupy the third place.
The other players to qualify for the Junior Nationals are Saeed Ali (5.5 points), Kana Khan (5.5 points), Rashad Hussain (5.5), Davendra Singh (5 points) and Sham Khan (5 points).
The qualifying senior players will attempt to dethrone national champion, Berbician Kriskal Persaud, when the National Championships gets underway early November.
However, the junior players will be battling each other for a vacant title. This crown was previously worn by Ronald Roberts who has since exceeded the stipulated age to be considered.
Meanwhile, in an invited comment minutes after he was declared champion, Greenidge said that the turnout was extremely commendable and augurs well for the sport. He said that the quality of play was exceptionally high and even though he had practiced thoroughly, he was forced to call on his experience to come out on top.
Quizzed on his ambitions for the national championships he remarked, “I will be training very hard for the championships. As to whether I will win! Only time will tell.”
Secretary of the GCF, Irshad Mohamed dubbed the tournament highly successful. He attributed this to the large turnout and the fact that many of the veterans participated, which forced the young players to perform to a high standard.
“I am impressed by the high standard of play displayed by participants which, to my mind, is an indication of the positive strides the sport is making,” Mohamed added.
Each senior qualifier was subsequently presented with a Bar-B-Que Grill, compliments of corporate citizen, Kei-shars while the junior players received trophies compliments of Sashies.
