NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Plans for Mashramani 2009 in East Berbice has commenced. Members of the Region Six National Events Committee met last week, and proposals were made for several events.
The Planning Committee is to comprise members of the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Fire Service, Guyana Prison Service, representatives of the Department of Education, private sector, Berbice Chamber of Commerce, Alliance For Change, People’s National Congress, Regional Administration and media.
According to the Chairman of the Region Six National Events Committee, Faizal Jaffarally, these plans include the launching of Mashramani 2009, Best Decorated Building competition, a contest that deals with the preservation of the environment, sports, focus on senior citizens, flag raising ceremony, Regional Chairman’s Reception, Awards Ceremony, float parade, chutney and calypso quarter and semi-finals, panel discussions on television, a spelling bee competition, children’s road march and Media Workers Interaction Day, among others.
According to Mr. Jaffarally, each of the ten administrative regions is to have a Mash Night, and the actual format is now taking shape. Activities in East Berbice /Corentyne are expected to kick-off on January 14 with the official launching. The proposed location is Corriverton.
This should be followed by the Best Decorated Building competition, which is for the private sector and all Government agencies, including the municipalities, neighbourhood democratic councils and community development councils.
The environment competition would be for the neighbourhood democratic councils, municipalities and community development councils.
Starting in mid-January, the spelling bee competition is expected to run until the end of Mashramani Week.
On February 15, the Port Mourant Community Centre ground is expected to come alive with a day of sports, featuring cricket, circle tennis, football, dominoes and athletics.
The members of the National Events Committee are slated to visit two senior citizens’ homes in East Berbice — the Good Samaritan Home and the Dharm Shala — on February 21.
The flag raising ceremony is set for February 22.
The following week is the float parade in New Amsterdam, starting at Marks Bridge (Tacama Turn).
Mr. Jaffarally indicated that funds have always been an issue, and as such, support would be sought from the private sector in order to successfully pull off Mashramani 2009.
The committee is expected to meet again during the first week in November.
