GT&T pledges support for Jacob’s relatives
Saturday evening’s accident involving media practitioners should serve as a wake-up call to journalists that greater emphasis needs to be placed on public education and awareness on road safety.
This is according to the Guyana Press Association (GPA).
In a statement issued yesterday, the GPA noted that road accidents remain a leading cause of deaths worldwide.
“Our only reward, as media practitioners, must be safer roads,” the GPA stated.
The media fraternity across Guyana is deeply saddened at the tragic death of National Communication Network reporter Akila Jacobs, one of Guyana’s young and ambitious news reporters.
The GPA also encouraged media workers to use this opportunity to pray for the speedy and full recovery of the other members of the media who sustained injuries in the accident at Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
The death of Jacobs, the GPA stated, has come at a time when several media houses are confronting the daunting challenge of sustaining high standards, partly due to a high staff attrition rate.
“The fact that Akila entered the media almost immediately after completing secondary education and stayed the course remains a shining testimony of her love for the profession that she selected.”
Meanwhile, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) said yesterday that it regrets the unfortunate incident which has resulted in the loss of lives and injury to several persons.
The company expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, and wished those who sustained injury speedy recovery and a return to good health.
Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday, Chief Executive Officer of GT&T, Major-General Joe Singh, said that the company is presently working to assist the injured persons.
“The financial aspect of the tragedy will be dealt with in time, but the company is currently concerned about the injured.”
“A sense of priority has to prevail,” Singh said yesterday.
Singh also visited Jacob’s relatives and pledged the company’s support in any way possible.
The accident, which occurred just after 18:00 hrs, took the lives of National Communication Network (NCN) reporter Akila Jacobs, 23, and minibus driver Terrence Tappin.
Also injured in the accident were NCN Radio announcer Morano Isaacs; operator Mohamed Nazim, camerawoman June Ann Amsterdam, Guyana Times Reporter Ravina Gildharie, and Serena Knights, a supervisor at GT&T’s Linden branch.
The occupants of the minibus had travelled earlier in the day to Ituni, where GT&T had installed a new cell site.
