Everest beat MSC in rain-hit semi-final
TSC/GCC semi to be re-played this weekend
Malteenoes’s recent disappointing run in local cricket continued yesterday when they lost to Everest in the rain-hit Georgetown zone semi-final of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Hand-in-Hand second division knockout 50-overs competition.
Transport Sports Club (TSC) will have to do it all over again after their semi-final clash with GCC was washed out after TSC posted 236-8 off 46 overs. The re-match is scheduled for this weekend and the winner of this game will clash with Everest in the City final.
At the MSC ground, the Malteenoes batsmen, who have been going through a run drought recently, finally ‘put it together’ and spearheaded by a magnificent 151-run second wicket stand between Danny Narayan (87) and Delvon McEwen (65) reached 247-6 when rain ended their innings with the 50th over to be bowled.
Using the antiquated rules of run-rate rather than the Duckworth/Lewis system, Everest began their innings with the advantage of having their victory target reduced by 122 runs and with all of their wickets in tact after rain stopped play at 12-0 in 2.4 overs.
The damp outfield, slippery ball, revised total and a pugnacious innings from former Guyana under-19 player Troy Gonsalves then helped the Camp Road side to 127-3 off 21.3 overs after they were set 126 from 25 overs to book a place in the final.
The talented Gonsalves benefited from a skied chance off national under-19 pacer Howard Chance, which the Keeper missed completely early in his innings, and he responded with an array of entertaining shots on the small ground before falling one short of what would have been a well played half-century.
The right-handed Gonsalves, who posted 82 for the first wicket with his Skipper Surendra Herilall (29), smashed four fours and a massive six in his robust innings as Everest, who were set a run rate of five runs per over to win, came out with all guns blazing after the rain break.
National under-17 pacer Seon Daniels bowled with lively pace on a slow track but Chance was clobbered for 16 in his third over while off-spinner Sean Devers was ‘milked’ for 10 singles in his first two overs before he too was taken out of the attack as aggressive running aided by fumbles in the field helped the Everest cause.
Leg-spinner Jermaine Joseph was the best of the MSC bowlers and picked up two crucial wickets for 15 runs while former National under-15 spinner Denis Legay bowled well in spurts but struggled for control as the batsmen attacked.
The Experienced David Harper (17) pushed Everest closer to their target with intelligent batting while former Guyana youth player Raymond Singh smashed Devers, who bowled too flat and short on the ‘skiddy’ pitch, to the cover boundary as MSC failed to cope with the damp conditions and the flying start from the openers.
To compound a disappointing day at the office for the defending city champions, Everest won the match with a six when Singh (12*) was caught at long-on by Joseph off Devers as the fielder stepped onto the boundary.
Earlier, Narayan who played some exquisite drives and McEwen who batted with confidence and authority, joined forces when Imran Hassam (24) missed a sweep at left-arm spinner Javeed Rasheed and was leg before at 34-1 and completely dominated an all-spin Everest attack with enterprising batting before West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan (2-52) removed them both.
Legay struck two fours and a one-handed straight six in his unbeaten 25 as MSC increased the tempo in the last 15 overs to complete a solid batting performance by the hosts who again showed their penchant for losing crucial matches in recent times after their heart-breaking one-run loss in the Beharry Cup semi-final last month.
And while players from both Everest and MSC worked hard to ensure play at MSC after the rain, not a ball was bowled in the second innings of the other semi-final due to rain.
Steven Alves led the way from TSC with six fours and a six in 66 and got support from Travis Blyden who stroked seven boundaries in his 55.
Skipper Shaun Massiah (35) and Terrence Poole (26) supported with the bat for TSC as Chindanand (3-31) and Waslim Haslim (2-39) were the best bowlers for GCC in the washed out encounter.
The DCB should address the issue of updating their playing conditions for all local DCB limited-overs cricket, especially in areas of revised victory targets, power-plays and free hits from no-balls to meet the new standard in world cricket.
