Guyana to get more aid to fight drug trafficking

Guyana will definitely benefit from increased assistance from the United States of America to fight the drug trade.
This assurance was given by newly appointed US Ambassador to Guyana, John Jones, during an exclusive interview with the Kaieteur News.
Jones said that the issue of US narco fighting assistance was not one of those discussed during his meeting with President Bharrat Jagdeo.
“But you can rest assured that there will be,” Ambassador Jones said.  A previous US Ambassador to Guyana had stated that assistance from America depended on the success scored by the local drug enforcement agencies.
At the time, a US State Department report had disclosed that the Guyana Government was not doing enough to stem the scourge.  The report had cited corruption within the judicial system as one of the main hindrances.
Guyana is one of the major transshipment points for Colombian narcotics destined for North America and Europe, and several couriers originating from Guyana have been apprehended both at home and abroad.
But despite the apprehension in other countries of large caches of cocaine coming from Guyana, there is no record of any prosecution in Guyana with regards to these finds.
Ambassador Jones reiterated that his government is very concerned about drug trafficking, and he admitted that the United States of America is the major market for illicit drugs coming from this part of the world.
He said that in his consultations prior to his arrival in Guyana, discussions were held with the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) administration, which is very keen on working closely with Guyanese officials in terms of establishing a greater presence here. There is a plan to establish a DEA office, but the date is still to be finalized.
“This is something that we pay a great deal of interest in, because (drugs) is so difficult for America to get rid of. Our drug enforcement administration is very, very active and interested in what’s going on here, so I think in the very near future you will see a lot more activity on their part here,” Ambassador Jones said.
He declined to comment on the arrest and prosecution of Guyanese Shaheed ‘Roger’ Khan, citing judicial procedures that prevent comment on a matter before the court.
