The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has named a six member team to represent this country at the National Lotteries Authority 8th Elite Caribbean Cycling Championship set for October 26 -27, in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Those riders shortlisted are Alonzo Greaves, Tyrone Hamilton, Robin Persaud, John Charles, Lear Nunes and Junior Niles.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport Saturday, President of the GCF Hector Edwards said that he is hoping that enough funds can be raised in order to send all the riders. A number of cycling enthusiasts have already started to contribute financially towards the realisation of the full team travelling.
Businessman and veteran cyclist Shameer Baksh Saturday handed over a cash donation to the Treasurer of the GCF William Howard at the National Park. Also contributing to date are Steven Edwards and Raymond Perez.
Baksh said he was very happy to be contributing towards the team’s participation and he is confident that the Guyanese will do well.
Perez, who has always been contributing tangibly to the sport, said he too was pleased to be contributing also. Edwards noted that the monies received to date covers two riders and the Federation is looking forward to others coming on board to assist.
Kaieteur Sport also understands that the respective Presidents of the International Cycling and Pan American Federations will be part of the event in St. Vincent.
The locals will be competing against riders from 26 countries including the host, and will participate in a time trial on the 26th over a distance of 24 miles and the road race on the 27th which will be 75 miles.
In 2004 Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams was crowned champion with Greaves placing fourth and the Guyanese are aiming to win the race again to underline their dominance in the region where our juniors are number one.
The route for the time trial is from San Souci to Rabacca dry River and back where the riders will cover the course twice. The same course will be used for the road race but will see the riders covering the course six times.
Countries invited to the championship are St Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua, Tortola, St Croix, St Martin, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Suriname, Dominica, Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Anguilla, Belize, St Kitts, Montserrat, Curacao, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahamas and Aruba.
The gold sponsors for the event are the National Lotteries Authority, Villa Lodge Hotel, SVGTV and Murray Heights Hotel with the silver sponsors being the National Olympic Committee, Cash Money Auto, The News Newspaper and Mavcom.
His Excellency Sir Frederick Ballantyne is the Patron of the Championship.
The course starts at the San Souci Bus Stop at 150 feet above mean sea level. It descends at an average gradient of 1:6 over 1/4 mile to about 15’ above sea level. Then there is short climb through a vertical curve for approximately 400 yards then returns to an average of flat course at approximately 20 feet above mean seal level.
The next 2 miles maintains a general flat course up to the Colonarie community where the trail then descends gently before going through another vertical curve.
This curve is steeper, rising rapidly to about 150 feet at an average slope of 400, passing through the Byrea Hill tunnel to a more or less flatter slope at the top of the curve; the curve then descends rapidly through to the Grand Sable Bridge (Texaco Gas Station).
From this point the trail meets its second flat section passing through Georgetown, Bay Road, and Langley Park before arriving at the Rabacca Bridge.
