At approximately 19:40 hours last evening, a car (PKK 6788) slammed into the fence of a house at Lot 6 Houston, East Bank Demerara.
The driver of the car apparently tried to make his getaway on foot, after his female companion and two young children were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) by public-spirited citizens.
He was, however, stopped by other public-spirited citizens, who convinced him to go back to the scene of the accident, where he subsequently gave a statement to a plainclothes police rank and was escorted to a nearby police station.
It appeared that the driver took the turn too fast and lost control of the vehicle. Bystanders said that he must have been very excited and in a hurry to get to the Car and Bike Show.
According to passers-by, the car ran off the road, and when the tyres hit the drain, the impact caused the car to spin before careening into the fence of the building, partially demolishing it. Residents of the house told this newspaper that the driver of the car would have to pay to have the fence repaired.
They added that, due to the gaping hole in the fence, they would have to add further security to their premises, as anyone could now simply walk into the yard.
At the GPHC, Kaieteur News spoke with the driver’s female companion, Samantha Lewis, 23, of Lot 39 Houston, who identified herself as the wife of the driver. She said that her husband had lost control of the car and slammed into the fence of the house. She refused to comment further.
