The Guyana Hockey Board is inviting its women’s national squad members to resume training tomorrow October 20 from 5:30pm at the Georgetown Cricket Club.
The squad has enjoyed a long training break and is assembling for the first time since the inaugural Pan American Club Championship in Trinidad during November 2007.
After a fifteen year hiatus from international competition, the Guyanese women competed in their first ever international tournament in Venezuela in 2005 being a Tri-nation Challenge between hosts Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. Guyana placed a creditable second in this tournament to Brazil.
One year later Guyana’s women competed against Caribbean superpowers Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica. Despite placing at the bottom of the competition, newcomers Guyana gave a good account of themselves improving throughout the competition as was evident by the score lines.
With an eye to qualify for the first time in History for the Pan American Games in 2011, Guyana has its sights set on making several trips to gain valuable experience against foreign opposition on artificial hockey pitches, the first of which is scheduled for Jamaica in 2009. Many fund-raising events are planned as financing a successful campaign will not be easy.
Training sessions will be run twice weekly with weekly matches on a third day.
The players required to report for training are: Natalie Hing, Tracey Atkinson, Tonza Sarrabo, Alysa Xavier, Wendy Boohoo, Marisha Rodrigues, Thalia Fiedtkou, Tiffany Solomon, Trisha Woodroffe, Vashema Bourne, Vanessa Pires, Sonia Gordon, Tricia Fiedtkou, Makini Harry, Shameeza Mohamed, Dominique DeGroot, Marzena Fiedtkou, Chantelle Fernandes, Cora Towler, Maria Munroe, Sonia Jardine, Brennette Gordon, Avonda James, Kerensa Fernandes, Carol Caine, Janella Munroe, Ulrica Sutherland, Gabriella Xavier, Shebiki Baptiste and Amanda Garnett.
