Carr, Herbert crowned championsIsaiah Carr and Berbician Jamelia Herbert became the first set of players to be crowned champions as play in the Le Meridien / Pegasus Open Tennis Tournament got started on Friday, at the Hotel’s Hard-courts.
Carr and Herbert carted off the Mini-Court categories, which is a newly introduced division implemented for players who’re appearing in a tournament for the first time.
In the Boys final, Carr defeated Jeremy Sayers 21-9, while Herbert beat Elmira Persaud 21-5 to claim the Girls title.
Earlier, Carr advanced to the final after crushing Anthony Grant 15-1, while Sayers inflicted a similar defeat on Samuel Archibald.
Herbert got past Ashmita Tulsi 15-5 in their semi-final clash, while Persaud gained a walkover from Shauna John.
In other results: Boys 12 and under division, another Berbician Keith Wintz reached the quarter-finals after benefiting from a walkover offered by Gavin Lewis; Benedict Sukra defeated Brian Ramsudh 9-3; Alan Correia beat Khalid Gobin 9-1 and Joshua Lalbachan gained a walkover from Demarge Rambarran.
In the Girls 12 and under category, Tamera Chester, who had earlier received a walkover in the round of 16 eventually lost to Jamali Homer 8-9 in an exciting contest, while Varsha Panday and Afruica Gentle each advanced by walkovers.
In the Boys 14 and under division, Deion Blackmore beat Dominic Fraser 9-1, while in the Girls segment Tanya Niamatali blanked Videlle David 9-0; Sancia Timmers of Berbice defeated Amelia Mazarally 9-5, while defending champion Shauna Gentle started her defence with an easy 9-9 win over Niamatali.
In the lone Boys 18 and under match, Nicholas Glasgow beat Alex Souvenir 6-2, 6-1.
In Friday night’s results: Men Singles- Imo Fox cruised past Gavin Barckoy 6-4, 6-0; Rudy Grant was an easy 6-1, 6-1 winner over Travis Ferreira; Ronald Murray eliminated Jonathan Antczak 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 and Brian Johnson gained a walkover from Jason Glasgow.
In Mixed Doubles action- Ezra Sue-Ho / S. Gentle defeated Saveion David- Longe / Varsha Panday 6-0, 6-1.
In Men’s 35 and over Division- Rawle Sue-Ho beat Julian McEwan 6-3, 6-1 and in Men’s 35 and over Doubles- Maxie Fox/ Victor Da Silva removed Daniel Quaicoe / Gilbert Barckoy 6-4, 6-2.
More matches were contested last evening, while the competition continues today.
