Alonzo Greaves added yet another winning trophy to his already large collection when he carted off the feature school boys and novice 35-lap race at yesterday’s annual Toucan Industries Kraft Foods sponsored 11-race cycling meet at the National Park.
Greaves, who took four of the eight prime prizes, won in a time of one hour 28 minutes 48 seconds in a sprint ahead of Robin Persaud (2 primes) and Geron Williams (2 primes) in that order.
Daniel Ramchurejee, Lear Nunes and Junior Niles closed out the top six in a race that saw the top three riders lapping the entire field, Physically Challenged athlete Grant Stuart suffering that fate twice.
The feature clash started at a blistering pace by the 20 riders who took the starters orders but it was clear five laps into the race that a number of riders were not going to last the entire distance.
Greaves, Persaud and Williams carried a blistering pace at the top of the event and by lap five had distanced themselves from the second bunch by 36 seconds which increased to 58 one lap later. They never looked back and maintained that advantage until the end.
Such was the dominance of the leading three that by lap eight, Niles was already lapped and by the 21st the rest of the field was overtaken.
With about 6 to go, it was a keen attacking duel between Williams and Greaves as they sought to outdo each other.
The race was also used as a warm up leading up to the national five stage battle which is expected to pedal off early November, a number of foreign competitors are expected.
Jason Pollydore was a double winner on the day with victory in the juvenile 10-lap race ahead of Johnathan Fagundes and Naiomi Singh. He also took the top spot ahead of Singh in the 12-14 contest.
Kennard Lovell took the veterans under-50 race ahead of Bochel Samaroo and Ravendra Singh while the over-50 event went to Lloyd Williams ahead of Maurice Fagundes.
In the BMX races, Raymond Perez was again unstoppable in the 6-9 age group, winning ahead of Dineshwar Ragubeer and Rawle Mc Lean.
Olandio King won the 9-12 clash with second and third going to Tariq Baksh and Perez.
King also took the 12-14 race, Baksh again was the runner up with Randy Smart third.
Crystal Blackman was the lone 6-12 girl while in the open clash, Kevin Edwards was the winner with Fagundes and Ozia McCually following in that order.
On hand to distribute prizes was Managing Director of Toucan Industries Lennie Shuffler who congratulated all the top performers and gave his company’s commitment to the continued development of the sport.
