Loris Nathoo, David Khan and Ronuel Greenidge amassed five points apiece to maintain the lead when the Guyana Chess Federation held its qualifying tournament as a precursor to the National Chess Championships, in the Lotus Room, Tower Hotel, last evening.
The tournament is being sponsored by Kei-shars and Sasha Cells. Frankie Farley and Errol Tiwari were their closest opposition on 4 1/2 points apiece.
In the junior category Taffin Khan amassed 6 points from as many games to maintain the lead over Cecil Cox on 5 points. Rashad Hussain also scored 5 points but when the tie breaker system was employed he was confined to third place. The tournament commenced last Sunday and will conclude today.
The tournament was not spared of controversy, evident in the game between Tiwari and Roy Sharma. Playing in game number four, a technical matter was referred to the Technical Director (TD), Irshad Mohamed, culminated with Sharma angrily opting out of the tournament for what he referred to as unfair practices by the Technical Director. According to Sharma, 30 minutes had already elapsed in his game against Tiwari when it was discovered that Tiwari was playing the black pieces when he should have been playing the white.
Sharma intimated that the rules pertaining to such an eventuality instructed that under such circumstances, if this anomaly is detected before the third move is completed, the game is automatically restarted. However, if the error is detected after the stipulated time, the game continues but the pairing is modified to reflect the actual colors used.
Sharma said that the game was already 43 moves old when the anomaly was detected. He said that after he and his opponent failed to appease the situation they sought the intervention of the Technical Director. He said that instead of referring to the rules, which is very explicit on the matter, the TD ordered a replay. It was then that Sharma decided that he wanted no other part in the tournament.
In response to Sharma’s allegation Mohamed disclosed that he referred to the rules of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) which clearly states in article 7:2 that “if a game begins with colours reversed then it shall continue unless the arbiter rules otherwise.” Mohamed said he ruled that the game be replayed but Sharma chose to abort the game. He then had no other option but to award the game to Tiwari. Sharma has since vowed to seek redress at a higher forum.
Meanwhile, the tournament continues this morning at the same venue.
