The Berbice Cricket Board of Control through its Special Events Committee, on Thursday created yet another first when it launched its Hall of Fame, with a simple ceremony which was sponsored by Metro stationary and office supplies in Berbice.
At the Boards office at Charlotte Street and Stand New Amsterdam, six former test cricketers were the first inductees who were awarded with certificates and had their names and records inscribed on plaques which are on display.
The inductees were Basil Butcher, Joe Solomon, Rohan Kanhai, Alvin Kallicharran, and the late Roy Fredericks and John Trim.
Chairman of the Special Events Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board, Hilbert Foster, who chaired the proceedings, in his opening remarks alluded to Dave Martin’s popular song, “Where are your heroes Caribbean?”, referring to the scant respect that our Guyanese and Caribbean people have placed on our heroes and those that would have contributed significantly in the past.
Foster who is also Secretary/CEO of the much revered Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club told the small gathering that included relatives of the inductees, New Amsterdam Mayor Claude Henry, Test cricketer Sewnarine Chattergoon and representatives of the Board including acting president Keith Foster, Metro Berbice branch manager Avie Lindie, former Board Secretary Mortimer George and members of the media, that by do things like this, we will preserve history and help our youths know those who would have contributed in the past.
He said that this ceremony is to show that the committee will not be caught in that mould. He noted that the contribution these gentlemen would have made to our cricket in the past is worth emulating and the least we can do to show our appreciation is to honour them. Their records he said would speak for themselves who in total played 279 test matches between them.
They definitely are the finest set of cricketers we would have produced in this part of the world, saying that they would have set the stage for the Ancient County’s rich cricketing history. He said that two additions will be made to the list every two years.
Foster mentioned a long list of persons from different parts of the world who would have contributed to the success of their country in one way or the other and who is revered through out the world.
People like Sir Winston Churchill, Queen Victoria, Sir Jack Hobbs, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Mahatma and Indira Gandhi and Sunil Gavaskar just to name a few. He also alluded to those from the Caribbean who have contributed significantly to the development of the rich cricketing history of the Caribbean starting with the likes of Sir George Headley Three Ws, Worrel, Walcott and Weeks , Sir Garfield Sobers, Rohan Kanhai, Lance Gibbs, Clive Lloyd, Reverend Wesley Hall, Sir Vivian Richards and Brian Lara just to name a few.
Since the formation of the Special Events Committee, a number of ventures were successfully undertaken including the Berbice Educational Awards Scheme, Berbice Annual Awards ceremony and the Tribute to Heroes and donors and honourary membership programmes, honouring the latest West Indies player from Berbice Sewnarine Chattergoon amongst others. While a number of other initiatives will embark on soon.
Among them, printing of a magazine, naming of a Berbice all time eleven and a visit by former United Nations Ambassador, West Indies captain and Director and present president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket board Dereck Murray in collaboration with the RHTY&SC, are a few that are on the cards.
None of the inductees were present but Relatives were on hand to receive their certificates on their behalf.
