Caretaker of the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), Brian Barker, is livid over remarks reportedly uttered by Mayor Hamilton Green after he (Green) visited the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym (HEBG) recently.
Mr. Green had gone to the Albouystown facility to observe the team of boxers preparing for the current Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.
Having witnessed the substandard training facilities at the HEBG the Mayor had wondered aloud why the team was not allowed to train at the more contemporary ALBG.
Barker said that he is presently performing caretaker duties at the ALBG and up to the time of the Mayor’s visit, no member of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) had made a request for its use. He said that an agreement existed between the managers of the Gym and executives of GABA for the use of the facility, provided such requests are made in ample time.
He said that he only learnt that GABA needed to utilize the facility when the report appeared in the newspapers.
Barker further stated that he was subsequently approached by one of the coaches, Terrence Poole and he (Barker) immediately assented to accommodate the boxers.
Subsequently, the boxers were re-sited to the new location. “This was simply a communication problem that could have been fixed with one phone call,” Barker asserted.
He also assured that the facility is always open to the amateur boxers while hoping that such an unfortunate situation is not repeated.
