Hosts DCC made heavy weather of an inexperienced and under-prepared Nandy Park unit before romping home to a 62-run win in their second round clash yesterday in the Demerara zone of the National 20/20 cricket competition.
Azim Azeez trapped Guyana 20/20 player Chris Barnwell for a first ball duck and then bowled national under-19 left hander Trevon Griffith for a top score of 30 as DCC put on a schoolboy-like performance on a good track to limp to 109-8 off their allotted 18 overs after a late start.
But once Daniel Sarjoo fell for 12 and 29-year-old Skipper Rohan Sarjoo, who played his solitary first-class game in 1997, skied former national player Garvin Nedd for a catch after hitting the off-spinner onto the DCC Lawn Tennis Court off the previous delivery, the Nandy Park team crashed to the lowest total in the competition as they fell for 47 in 14.5 overs.
Nandy Park threatened to create the biggest upset in the competition when Barnwell, one of the most naturally talented cricketers in Guyana played back to Azeez and was leg before first ball, while had Trevon Griffith been held at mid-on, DCC would have been 2-0 off two balls.
Griffith counter attacked with some enterprising shots but like most of his teammates, displayed impetuous shot selection and was dropped twice before his eventual demise at 54-2.
Former medium pacer Rakesh Gangaram quickly removed Derwin Christian (11), Jamal Hinkson (7) and Trevon Garraway (12) to leave the score on 74-5 as the temperament of the DCC batsmen came under serious question.
When Denis Squires (3) threw his wicket away with a catch to long-off and Coen Ismond (7) was taken at point off left-arm spinner Denis Mangru at 83-7, the DCC supporters were cringing with embarrassment.
Kester Harcourt, who struggled to get the ball off the square, was soon taken in the deep off Troy Jaisingh as the Nandy Park line-up, despite fumbles in the field and a few dropped catches clearly dominated their much superior opponents for the first half of the contest.
Gangaram, a competent first division cricketer in his prime, had the flattering figures of 4-0-11-3 while Mangru 2-11 and Azeez 2-20 did their job with the ball.
But is was always going to be an uphill task for the East Bank based side to reach their victory target against a strong bowling attack and in the end only Daniel Sarjoo reached double figures as Nandy park crashed to defeat.
Kevin George, again opening the bowling with his off-spin, had 2-5 from four overs while Barnwell took 3-8 and off-spinner Nedd and Squires two cheap wickets each for the Queenstown side who will have to seriously re-think their approach to 20/20 cricket if their batsmen hope to deliver what their talent suggest they should in the remainder of the competition.
