The Azad Khan Lumber Yard under-19 forty-over cricket competition was officially launched on Wednesday at the Khan’s Lumber yard at Tuschen on East Bank Essequibo.
Ten teams from the Essequibo Islands, East Bank Essequibo, West Coast Demerara and West Bank Demerara Demerara will participate in the competition which will be played in two zones.
The zone ‘A’ winner will face the zone ‘B’ champions in the final for the $25,000 first prize and trophy while the runner-up will collect $15,000 and a trophy.
The sponsorship is worth $225,000 and includes the batsman with the most runs ($5,000), bowler with the most wickets ($5,000) and Man-of-the-Match in the final ($5,000).
Each player in the final will receive caps and shirts with the sponsors’ name while plenty of entertainment is planned for the final.
After the competition, a Khan’s Lumber Yard Select X1 will face-off with a Georgetown Under-19 team at a West Demerara venue.
Khan said he was happy to come on board as a sponsor since this is the age group that produces our future national players.
He urged the West Demerara players to use this opportunity to showcase their talent while organizer Troy Khan thanked Khan for sponsoring the competition, adding that very little under-19 cricket has been played in West Demerara in the last decade.
Khan said that he has organized two competitions and have had the support of the fans and the media, in particular Kaieteur News.
Zeeburg, Leguan, Canal Number Two, Zeelught, Meten-Meer-Zorg Sports Club will play in zone A while Windsor Forest, Cornelia Ida, Parika Warriors, West Bank All Youths and Cultural will compete in zone B.
Tomorrow Zeeburg play Leguan at Zeeburg, Windsor Forest take on Parika Warriors at Meten-Meer-Zorg West, while three games are also scheduled for Sunday.
On Sunday, Meten-Meer-Zorg South meet Zeelught at Meten-Meer-Zorg West, Parika Warriors play West Bank All Youth at Zeeburg and CI oppose Windsor Forest at CI.
