The Andrew “Sixhead” Lewis Boxing Gym was a hive of activity yesterday afternoon as the former World Boxing Council welterweight champion applied the finishing touches to his training sessions for his bout with Howard “The Battersea Bomber” Eastman this month-end.
Women International Boxing Council(WIBC) and Women International Boxing Association(WIBA) light/heavyweight champion, Gwendolyn “Stealth Bomber” O’Neil was also hard at work at the same training facility in preparation for the return bout with Carlotta Ewell in St Maarteen on November 1.
Both fighters appeared ready for combat and are basically concentrating on the technical aspects of their programme.
Lewis, back in the gym after a two week rest ordered by the doctor after he had sustained a shoulder injury during training, assured that he is in the pink of condition. He said that he only needed two weeks of the three week rest prescribed by the doctor.
The lanky fighter was engaged in shadow boxing and rigid bag work before undergoing a lengthy session of skipping.
When informed of Eastman’s plan to incite the powers of “Kadamar”(The spiritual being worshipped by Rastafarians), Lewis scoffed and issued some strong words for the born again Rastafarian, “ You had better come strong because I am preparing for you and your “Kadamar.” Lewis said that he is not focusing on a knockout but if it presents itself he will grab it with both hands.
Meanwhile Gwendolyn “Stealth Bomber” O’Neil is also oozing confidence for her return bout with Ewing. Her regiment consisted of shadow boxing, skipping, abdominal, as well as reflexes exercises.
This she did by rapidly bouncing a basketball to the wall. Her coach Lennox Daniels explained that the objective of this particular exercise was to hone her shoulder muscles into shape while burning excessive fat in that area. He also said that the exercise was meant to improve on O’Neil’s reflexes.
O’Neil said that she is confident of winning the return match. She said that this time she will aspire to finish the fight within the distance.
“I had a good feel of her in our first fight so I know what I have to do this time around,” O’Neil asserted. Pressed for a prediction O’Neil tersely said, “Ewell badly wants to have these belts strapped around her waist but that will not happen in a month of Sundays.”
The champ said that all travel arrangements have concluded and she will leave for the Dutch speaking country in ample time to facilitate the acclimatization process. She will be accompanied by her coach Daniels and her husband/manager, Eon Peters.
