The National Under-21 squad long and anxious wait finally came to an end yesterday when they got positive word that they would be participating in the Junior Pan American Hockey Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.
The squad that has been in training for the past two years is a relatively inexperienced one at the regional and international levels, but according to Coach Rawl Davson even though it will be a difficult task for his charges, he is hoping that they show courage and commitment and learn from the exposure.
“We probably have two of the youngest players in the tournament, Steven (Xavier) is 14 years old and Shaquille (Assanah) is 15,” Davson informed.
The full team reads: Peter Michael DeGroot (Captain), Michael Xavier, Phillip Xavier, Steven Xavier, Shaka Gill, Kevin Fogenay, Leonard George, Shaquille Assanah, Zach Gonsalves, Orin Mayers, Trevon Smith, Al Fredericks, Jason Hoyte, Ameernauth Ramgati, Eric Hing and Trinidad and Tobago based Carl Wilson.
The team will be managed by former national player Ivor Thompson.
Guyana’s opening encounter is against Canada tomorrow and they then play Mexico the following day.
The other countries in the group are: Chile, Brazil and Barbados. The tournament last from October 17-26 and will be played at the National Hockey Centre.
