The hurricane season did not directly affect Guyana, but because of the hurricanes water has been in short supply to residents in several parts of the country because a shipment of alum, a compound used to purify water, was delayed.
However, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Karan Singh yesterday told Kaieteur News that the shipment of alum has arrived.
He said that the alum was at the wharf and clearing started on Monday. According to Singh, water supply should be back to normal soon. Alum has been introduced into the water supply.
For the past few weeks, there has been a reduction in the usual supply of water. Residents countrywide complained.
The shipment of alum was delayed because of affected shipping due to the hurricane season which started on June 1. Reports are that the hurricane season will run through November 30.
The arrival of the alum was greatly anticipated particularly by those areas that suffered very short hours of water supply.
