The Georgetown senior and junior teams to contest this year’s Beepat Supligen All-Star weekend were announced during a press briefing held yesterday, at Beepat’s General Store on Regent Street.
The All-Star weekend which is slated to be held on October 25-26 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will see G/town engage Linden in both the senior and junior categories, while their will also be three-point shootouts and dunking competitions for selected players along with the novelty events such as the Quick Bucks shooting and $100,000 half-court shootout for fans.
The meeting was arranged by the Organisers to apprise the media of the respective teams to be coached by Lugard Mohan (seniors) and Mark Agard (juniors), while Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) President Uborn Smith indicated that the team to represent the bauxite community will be known today.
Present at the gathering were Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABA) Technical Co-ordinator Robert Cadogan, Beepat Scorpions Representatives Warren Williams and Vijay Panday, Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) President Trevor Rose and Smith.
Cadogan, who deputised for GABF President Colonel Godwin McPherson (Retired) in his remarks, said that the entity was in support of the venture which has been going on for the past six years, referring to it as one of the events basketball need.
“It is good for the game, what it does is highlights all aspects of the sport so we give our blessings to the event knowing fully well that it will be as success,” Cadogan said.
LABA’s Smith echoed similar sentiments, adding that the annual showcase is highly regarded in the fraternity and because of the importance; the LABA has given its endorsement.
He further stated that Linden will he adequately represented and they were indeed grateful to be invited and on board again.
Rose for his part congratulated the Organisers for hosting the event another year, while easing the concern of one reporter who asked whether the lack of tournament activity in Georgetown would affect the performance of players.
“Fans can still expect a good brand of basketball despite the fact that not much activity was witnessed in the sport in Georgetown,” Rose assured.
He said players were still keeping active through some friendly matches at the Burnham Court. Williams thanked the respective associations representatives for their blessing and promised a well run weekend on activities that fans will enjoy.
Among the players expected from overseas are Trinidad and Tobago’s Steven ‘Lighter’ Lewis, who will suit up for Linden, while our own Andrew Ifill will make an appearance for G/town.
Efforts are currently being made to have other players from T&T and Suriname. Additionally both nights will have two surprise artistes.
The senior squad is: Ryan Gullen, Ryan Stephney, Darcel Harris (Ravens), Steffon Gillis, Royston Siland, Naylon Loncke (Courts Pacesetters), Kester Gomes, Travis Foster (Scorpions), Fabian Johnson (Nets) and Vivian Alder (Bounty Colts).
The junior team is: Tyrone Hamid, Kevin Levans, Jermaine Slater (Ravens), Travis Burnett, John Fraser (Courts Pacesetters), Jaime Mayers (Scorpions), Michael Thompson (Disciples), Keshon Robes, Jermaine Reid (Bounty Colts) and Binium Norton (Ravens). G/town will commence sessions on tomorrow.
