Suspect charged for attempted murder
Nikita Jordan, 18, of 48 Barrack Street, Kingston, was yesterday remanded to prison after she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer a charge of attempted murder.
Jordan is accused of pouring a corrosive substance on Haniyfa Cordis, 15, on October 8, 2008, while the victim lay sleeping.
The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable offence. She was represented by attorney-at-law Mohamed Zafar, who in a bail application, said that his client is a mother of one.
He added that on the day in question his client was acting in self defence and that Cordis attempted to stab Jordan.
However, Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith said that bail should be denied, because Cordis is still critical at the hospital. She added that Cordis was burnt while she was sleeping, which showed the “temperament” of Jordan.
Bail was denied and she is expected to make her next court appearance on November 27.
Haniyfa Cordis was burnt with a corrosive substance, which was allegedly thrown on her by Jordan. Earlier reports indicated that the “burning” may have stemmed from the suspect being accused of stealing a pair of jeans from Cordis.
Last Wednesday, the teen was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital after she sustained third degree burns to her face.
Reports stated that the suspect’s relatives and friends visited Cordis at the hospital and promised to “finish her off”.
According to a source at the hospital, the teen may lose her sight because of the extensive burns she sustained. The teen’s mother, Sharon Adolphus, said that her daughter is having heart problems because of the incident.
The teen’s friend had told this newspaper that she and Cordis had gone out the night before, and had returned home at around 4:30 hours and went to bed.
She explained that she and Cordis were sleeping when she felt something burning her skin. She said that within seconds she heard Cordis screaming.
Lane said that they did not know what had happened to Cordis because all she was saying was: “It burning! It burning”.
The woman said she did not see anything different on the teen’s face, so she was puzzled as to what may have been burning her.
Cordis was admitted to the Georgetown Hospital nursing third degree burns to her face and neck.
A neighbour had stated that she saw Jordan running from Cordis’s home, holding something in her hand.
