Maxie DeJonge, National under-19 skipper Eugene La Fleur and Dane Benny
played important roles with the bat as Bermine upset a strong Albion line-up by five wickets in the last over of their Berbice zone National Neal and Massy 40-overs first division cricket semi-final on Sunday at the Cumberland ground.
DeJonge, who represented Berbice at the senior level last year, stroked a confident 42 and got valuable support from Benny (37) and the level-headed La Fleur (39*) as Bermine reached 153-5 in 39.3 after national under-19 off-spinner Stephen Latcha took 3-27 as Albion were bowled out for 151 in 39.3 overs on a slow track.
Bermine will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Port Mourant and Young Warriors which is fixed for the Port Mourant ground on Saturday. The Berbice zone final is scheduled for Sunday.
Doodnauth Lallbeharry made 56 and West Indies under-19 left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul took 4-17 from seven overs in a losing effort as Albion employed an all-spin attack from the third over while Essequibo off-spinner Andrew Williams (2-16) and veteran off-spinner Charles Sheppard (2-24) along with Latcha, all bowled with control to keep the shackles on the much vaunted Albion batting line-up.
Electing to bat first, Albion lost Test opener Sewnarine Chattergoon to former Guyana under-19 pacer Kelon Henry at 23-1 before Test left-hander Narsingh Deonarine (28) and Doodnauth Lallbeharry, who stroked three fours and two sixes in 56, revived the position with a 52-run partnership.
Latcha soon got rid of Lallbeharry at 75-2 and Berbice batsman Ranga
Lachigadu (12) after Lachigadu and his Skipper had put together 29 for the third wicket.
From 104-2 Albion slumped to 109-6 as Latcha, who captured the prized scalp of Deonarine, got two quick wickets and Sheppard also struck twice in quick succession to the delight of the Bermine supporters.
Two run outs did not help the Albion cause as they were all out with three balls left in their innings although Guyana under-17 Selectee pacer Sharmendra Hardyal hit an undefeated 21 towards the end.
When Bermine began their reply, DeJonge dominated a 50-run opening partnership with Guyana under-17 Selectee Jamally Odle before Odle, the grandson of former West Indies Wicket Keeper Milton Pydanna, was bowled by Permaul.
Deonarine opened the bowling with medium pacer Lallbeharry and introduced the leg-spin of Chattergoon after just a solitary over of pace but the Berbice batsmen defied the spinners to send favorites Albion crashing out of the competition.
First-Class leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo removed DeJonge and Permaul dismissed Devon Clements (3) as two wickets tumbled at 67 to bring Albion back into the fray before Benny and La Fleur then put together 71 for the fourth wicket with sensible batting.
Permaul struck twice when he had Benny and Sheppard (0) in the same over to leave the New Amsterdam unit on 138-5 and the game set for a pulsating finish.
However, the pint size La Fleur remained unbeaten at the end and along with support from Williams (3) saw Bermine to victory.
