Close, but yet far!!! GDF’s Gavin Wilson (with ball) just outside the six yard box in the offensive third but yet unable to make the most of being so close. (Franklin Wilson photo)

Defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United once again sounded the hammer to their rivals that they intend to fight to the end to retain their title when they whipped the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 3-0 in the feature clash on Sunday evening as the 2008 Cellink Premier League (CPL) eases to another exciting climax.
In the evening’s opening salvo, the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) maintained their dominance against Pele with a 1-0 win to follow up their 2-1 win in the first round.
Alpha, who recently won the Alpha Football Festival knock-out championship, continue to grow in confidence and look a very solid and almost complete unit as their sound defence aided by equally effective offence continues to create problems for opposing teams. Their almost flawless performance avenged their first round 1-0 loss to the Army.
Anthony Abrams, a constant bother to their defence, fired in a double while Elton Browne tucked in the other before he was sent off in the 82nd minute for his second bookable offence.
The goal scorers capitalized on ordinary goalkeeping by Keith Fraser who was guilty of coming off his line too much on each occasion.
The GDF came closest to scoring in the 10th minute when Gavin Wilson outfoxed goal keeper Ronson Williams to take the ball away and fired a shot to goal which looked almost certain of scoring but central defender Kelvin McKenzie came out of nowhere to deny the goal by kicking the ball back into play.
On the next run down, the ball was given to the lurking Abrams who fired a well placed shot from the top of the box on the right side with Fraser well off his line for Alpha’s opening goal.
Alpha continued to impose their way and stamp their authority against the Soldiers as the game progressed with sounder team play as opposed to individual sparks from the Army which never really threatened their opposition.
Goal number two was netted by Browne in the 29th minute and almost immediately after, he received his first caution.
Again, Fraser was guilty of misjudging the play advancing even further off his line than the first goal, found himself in a one on one with Browne 25 meters out on the left side and Browne conscious that the goal was unattended, skillfully used his instep to curve the ball into goal, Alpha 2, GDF 0.
The scores remained unchanged for the remainder of the half but Alpha continued to dominate and it was no surprise when Abrams completed his double, collecting the ball in the attacking third with the defence beaten, Fraser attacked Abrams in an effort to deny the goal but was unsuccessful as the shot which got a piece of his boot ended up in goal from the top of the box.
With maximum points from this encounter, Alpha join Sunburst Camptown at the top of the points table with 27 each while the Army remain on 26.
GFC with their victory over Pele compliments of a 32nd minute strike by Peters Parks, move to 17 points, one more than Fruta Conquerors with Pele remaining on 13.
The Bourda Blues continue to be the surprise package of the CPL with some solid performances as Pele continue to struggle.
Competition will continue on Saturday evening with two more matches. Georgetown Football Club tangle with Uprising in the opening salvo with the main clash between GDF and Pele.
