Three men are presently nursing gunshot wounds after a policeman opened fire on them at a barbecue held at Post Office Street, Wales, West Bank Demerara early yesterday morning.
The men reportedly attacked the policeman after he instructed that the music be switched off at a certain time.
Police, in a press release, stated that they had given approval for Muniram, called ‘Reds,’ to hold a barbecue at his residence at Post Office Street, from 20:00 hours to midnight on Saturday.
Two ranks, a police corporal and a rural constable, were detailed to perform duties at the event. The corporal was armed with a .38 service revolver.
At midnight, the corporal informed Muniram that it was time to turn off the stereo set and bring the barbecue to an end. Muniram agreed, and this was done.
However, the patrons became angry; and some dissatisfied patrons, including Hemraj Kedna, called ‘Macaw’, 35, of Post Office Street, Wales, who had a beer bottle in his possession and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol; Javed Haniff, 14, of Post Office Street; and Ramesh Persaud, 20, of Long Pond, Sisters Village, WBD, approached the policeman in an unruly manner, hurling abuses and demanding that the music be turned back on.
Kedna reportedly scrambled on to the corporal, and a scuffle ensued, during which a round went off from the policeman’s service revolver which he had in his hand, hitting Javed Haniff to his left ankle and Ramesh Persaud below his right knee.
