The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is to begin paying out an estimated $200M to Carifesta X participants this week.
An official told Kaieteur News that the payments are expected to begin by Wednesday.
Staffers from the Carifesta Secretariat and performers are among an estimated 2,000 persons who have not been paid for the work during the mega-event, which was held in August.
There are reports that the Government exceeded its $500M Carifesta budget by some $200M.
Kaiateur News understands that $100M was spent on transportation.
The Carifesta Secretariat’s Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Dharamlall, had promised that the accounts from his department will be settled ‘shortly’.
He told Kaieteur News that the delay occurred because of the number of persons who were involved in the event, and the fact that all payments had to be verified.
Last week, actor and producer Aubrey Naughton, along with Sonia Yarde, picketed the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to demand payment.
Naughton, who acted in the folklore drama ‘Legend of the Silk Cotton Tree’, told Kaieteur News that he and other participants had been “keeping faith” with the Ministry of Culture, with which they had signed an agreement to be paid before September 8.
Naughton said that they staged the protest because CEO Dharmlall had assured the performers that they would be paid before the Secretariat was dissolved.
