DEAR EDITOR,
In SN of the July ’08, B. SINGH mentioned a litany of persons to succeed President Jagdeo, and finally said: “Dr Singh is a true and tried academic who I know is doing an honourable and respectable job as minister.
As President, I am sure he will connect with the issues from an honest and sincere point of view, and not be clouded by the ‘fog’ of politics and politicians.”
I have no quarrel with his proposal and testimony, even though I sense that Dr Singh’s VAT is a vampire bat. I will like to assert that his very name is against him.
In the early days of boxing, there was a dynasty of ‘J’, starting with J¬ack J-ohnson through to J-oe Louis and J-ersy J-oe Walcot.
When J-oe Frazier was to fight the unbeaten Ali, my father told me to put my money on J-oe Frazier because his name began with a J .
I took his advice and won. When the unbeaten Floyd Patterson defended his title against non-rated Ingemar J-ohannson, I again put my money on the J and won. My father stressed that if Janet Jagan were to fight the heavy weight champion, she would win, somehow!
In Guyana the ‘J’ dynasty started with Cheddi J-agan through to J-anet J-agan and J-agdeo; and believe you me, the next substantive president will be someone whose name begins with ‘J’ – not Dr Singh. And no one has ever preached the Second Coming of JOHN-the-Baptist.
