The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) Farfan and Mendes under-15’s along with the Pepsi under-19’s and Mrs. Nadine Budhoo of Canada on Thursday last launched the Annual Patricia Moniz Memorial Educational Award Programme at a simple ceremony at the Club’s Area ‘H’ Ground.
Under the programme financed by Mrs. Budhoo and the cricket teams, ten (10) less fortunate students drawn from the Port Mourant Primary and Secondary Schools benefitted from $100,000 worth of educational materials.
Four of the students received educational materials, school bags, school uniforms and footwear while six other students received educational kits.
RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony stated that the late Patricia Moniz was a mentor to all the members of the club.
Foster hailed her as a positive role model, pointing out that her sudden death last year was a major blow to the club and the Roman Catholic Church at Port Mourant, where she was an active member.
The Educational Awards Scheme which was launched in her memory was done because in her lifetime Ms. Moniz, a mother of four, placed a lot of emphasis on the importance of education.
The two junior RHTYSC cricket teams co-sponsorship of the programme falls under the pro-education campaign where they used themselves as positive role models to their peers in an effort to get them to say no to drug and yes to education.
The two teams also presented the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School with 3 gallons of paint, paint brushes and hygiene kits valued $40,000.
Assistant Public Relations Officer of the club, Sadiz Kudrath, who is a member of the Pepsi team, made the presentation to J.C. Chandisingh Secondary which would be used to repaint the school’s science lab.
Kudrath informed the gathering that all the members of the RHTY&SC Farfan & Mendes and Pepsi teams were doing well in school, stating that the boys wanted to assist their peers to do the same.
The two teams raise the necessary funds by making personal donations to a Special Team Account.
