Police are presently trying desperately to locate Nikita Jordan, who is wanted for questioning into an “acid throwing” incident on Wednesday at Lot 48 Barrack Street, Kingston.
Fifteen-year-old Haniyfa Cordis was burnt with a corrosive substance thrown on her by the suspect whilst she was sleeping. Earlier reports indicated that the “burning” may have stemmed from the suspect being accused of stealing a pair of jeans from Cordis.
The Guyana Police Force has the suspect’s boyfriend in custody, after family and friends had hinted that he may have been involved in the incident.
Last Thursday, the teen was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital after she sustained second degree burns to her upper body. Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the suspect’s relatives and friends visited Cordis at the hospital and promised to “finish her off”.
Meanwhile, the injured teen may lose the sight in one of her eyes because of the extensive burns she had received.
According to Angela Lane, a close friend of Cordis, she and Cordis had gone out the night before, and had returned home at around 4:30 hours and went to bed. She explained that she and Cordis were sleeping when she felt something burning her skin. She said that within seconds she heard Cordis screaming.
Lane said that they did not know what had happened to Cordis, because all she was saying was: “It burning! It burning!”
The woman said she did not see anything different on the teen’s face, so she was puzzled as to what may have been burning her. The teen was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing second degree burns to her face and neck.
A neighbour in the yard said that she saw the suspect running from Cordis’s home, holding something in her hand.
The woman further explained that Cordis and the suspect had an altercation earlier in the day.
