Front Side and Goedverwagting will collide in the eagerly awaited Plaisance Inter-Block Football final today, at the Plaisance Community Centre ground.
The two teams who reached the final after registering contrasting victories against their respective opponents are expected to provide fans from the village and its environs with an enthralling contest judging from their earlier displays during the competition.
Front Side, a young team well schooled by Coach Paul James scored an impressive 2-0 win over Scheme through goals from the skilful Jevon Gibson, who is certainly a very talented player and one not afraid to take on defenders, while James, a player with plenty experience gave them the lead in the contest.
On the other hand, Goedverwagting as they had done throughout the competition, once again displayed fighting qualities, coming from behind to score in sudden death penalty shootout for their place in the final.
To their credit, they fought all the way after falling behind for 69 minutes when Troy Charles gained the equaliser one minute before full time, before a miss by Troy Bunbury in sudden death kicks effectively took them out of contention after Devon Agard made good on his attempt.
These two players along with the dreadlocked Leon Lewis are the marquee players on the Goedverwagting side and the team’s chances of pulling off victory rest squarely on their shoulders.
The first game is between a Georgetown All Stars combination versus Hearts of Oak of Berbice, while two city sides Santos and Western Tigers collide in the second match.
In the veterans’ game, G/town All Stars should start as favourites and they’ve selected a star-studded team led by former national Captain Terrence Archer and include a host of former nationals as well.
Among those slated to appear are ‘Sir’ Anthony Stanton, a prolific striker in his heyday, Mortimer Stewart, Stanford Miller, Selwyn Bailey, Terrence Lewis, Nicky Thompson, Ronald Austin and Jolyon Lewis between the uprights.
Hearts of Oak line include Charles ‘Puggy’ Joseph, Tom Jones, Keith O’Jeer, Kurt Alphonso and Phillip Carrington.
The Santos line-up include Seon McKenzie (captain), O’Neil Heywood (Goalkeeper), Dexter Arthur, Jermaine Fraser, Renault Fraser, Quacy Price, Michael Oie, Michael Pedro, Glenorvan Edmonds and Assagai Clarke, while Tigers will come from Edison Gomes, Phillip Rowley, Devon Millington, Delon Fraser, Odell Younge, Orin Pompey and Sherman David.
Kick-off time is 18:00 hrs.
