Malteenoes Sports Club’s (MSC) disappointing batting continued when they crashed to a five-wicket defeat to GNIC in the lone game played yesterday in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Pepsi Cup 40-overs first division cricket competition.
Like on Friday when they slumped to 94 all out against DCC in the national Gafson’s Cup 20/20 fixture, impetuous shot selection was again the main reason for MSC’s paltry score of 120 in 31 overs as National player Orin Forde (26), Shemroy Barrington (25) and Antonnel Atwell (24) all failed to build on ‘starts’ on a MSC track with variable bounce in murky conditions.
Despite losing West Indies Test left-hander Sewnarine Chattergoon (15) and Martin Rajmangal (5) who made 70 in his team’s 20/20 encounter on Friday, GNIC recovered from 28-2 to reach 124-5 with 18.1 overs to spare.
Former Guyana under-19 keeper Delroy Jacobs was leg before for a duck to first-class pacer Esuan Crandon after he replaced Barrington at the top of the order and MSC were 6-1.
The Berbican Crandon, in his first season for city side GNIC, then removed Delroy’s cousin and opening partner Steven Jacobs when the West Indies under-19 Vice-Captain was also leg before for four at 7-2.
Barrington, who played against the touring Sri Lankans at the Stadium earlier this year, looked set for a big score when he injudiciously tried to pull a short ball from first-class pacer Rayon Griffith and spooned a catch to mid-off.
Forde, batting with an injured finger sustained while fielding in Friday’s 20/20 match, swept for Test off-spinner and present West Indies selector Clyde Butts for a big six before he tried to turn a ball from the veteran spinner through the on-side and offered a catch off the leading edge to point.
Atwell, who also swept Butts for six, missed an ambitious sweep at medium pacer Richard Chaturia and was leg before as MSC sank into further trouble as their talented but inconsistent batting line-up again failed to deliver.
Deon Ferrier, who was greeted with a quick bumper first ball, chased a wide ball and was caught behind for 15 after Danny Narayan was also removed for 15.
Crandon finished with 3-22, Chaturia 3-16 and Butts 2-18, Griffith (1-37) and Essequibo’s former Guyana under-19 pacer Ryan Hercules (1-20) were the other wickets takers as GNIC employed four-prong pace attack against the home team.
After former Guyana youth pacer Jeremiah Harris, in his first game since his return from English cricket on Thursday evening, removed Rajmangal while the impressive Daniels got rid of Chattergoon, Shaun DeSouza thumped five fours in 37 and Chaturia whose unbeaten 22 contained a six and a four off Ferrier in his first over, ensured GNIC won with lots of time to spare.
