New management of the Greenheart Medical University, which had encountered several problems since its establishment in 2005, has promised a completely restructured school and a medical programme in place that meets international standards.
Businessman Kevin Holder, the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the university, said that he has “booted out” the old management and has made several changes.
Under the old management, Holder said, there were problems with visas for the students, refunds, failed promises of jobs and loans, students that were not qualified were being admitted, and at one point the Dean was a second-year medical student.
“We have totally restructured the school,” Holder noted.
According to him, the school now has qualified instructors and it has risen to a stay rate of from zero to 75 per cent.
“We don’t want people who can’t cut the mustard,” Holder contended.
In addition, Holder said, the management of the school has brought in a fully qualified Dean, who was in charge of a university in the Dominican Republic. There are three full-time doctors on staff, Holder said.
Holder also said that he has moved to Guyana from Canada to ensure that high standards at the university are maintained.
Currently, he noted, there are five Guyanese students doing clinical rotation at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Holder also pointed out that he is sure that the students have not lost confidence in the school.
Recently, Holder has had meetings with Prime Minister Sam Hinds, and will soon be meeting with the Ministers of Health, Home Affairs and Education.
