On a day in which their senior team was hammered by GNIC, the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) under-19 side avenged that loss by beating host GNIC by five wickets in their De Sinco Cup 40-overs under-19 cricket competition yesterday.
Fourteen-year-old Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Esau stroked nine fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 97 as MSC reached 233-5 off 36 overs replying to GNIC’s 229 all out in 40 overs on the small Woolford Avenue ground.
National under-17 selectee Quincy Ovid Richardson led the GNIC fight with 57 and added 92 for the first wicket with Dwight Dodson (23) before Guyana under-17 Skipper Dexter Solomon made 37 and Delroy Charles 40 and 48 extras helped the GNIC cause.
Jonathan Alphonso had 3-64 from eight expensive overs while Shaquelle Williams took 2-36 for MSC.
Esau, who has two centuries at the school level for La Grange Secondary, batted confidently after being dropped early in his innings and go support from Kefa Naughton who hit three fours and a straight six in his 27, Nichosie Barker (21) and former Georgetown under-15 Captain Altaf Habibulla who finished unbeaten on 20.
The left-handed Esau was denied a chance of posting his first ton at club level when, with 15 required to win and Esau on 93, Habibulla stroked two off-side fours before clobbering a six over square-leg to level the scores.
Esau then ended the game in the next over with a boundary as he finished three short of his landmark.
