The Ministry of Health is monitoring hospitals and private clinics for any signs of illness that may have been caused by the consumption of contaminated milk originating from China.
Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy made this disclosure yesterday, but stated that officials have received no indication of an outbreak of melamine-related symptoms.
“Hospitals, health centres and clinics are being monitored, but we have no evidence of anyone being affected,” Ramsammy said.
The contaminated milk exported from China contains melamine, a toxic chemical that can cause kidney stones and kidney-related illnesses.
News reports out of China stated that approximately 1,300 babies, mostly newborns, remain in hospital because of the contamination, with more than 150 suffering from acute kidney failure.
The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department of the Ministry of Health has, so far, seized over 50 cartons of the Milky and Creamy brands of evaporated milk and 340 cartons of the Country Maid brand of evaporated milk which originated from China.
In addition, the Government Analyst Department has also discovered in Guyana three other brands of milk that originated from China.
These brands are CREAMY evaporated milk, Country Maid evaporated milk, and Polly sweetened condensed milk.
The department has since been informed by the importer that there is a consignment of 1,400 cartons of Country Maid full cream milk powder currently on its way to Guyana.
Consumers are being warned to carefully read labels of milk and milk products, including chocolate, biscuits and candies, to ensure that they were not manufactured or packaged in China, before making purchases.
Director of the department, Marilyn Collins, is appealing to wholesalers and retailers of these products to voluntarily remove from their shelves milk and milk products made in China.
