The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) is no longer experiencing a severe shortage of blood, as according to National Blood Donor Manager of the blood bank, Shameeza Mangal, the situation is back to normalcy.
Two months ago, the NBTS had issued an ‘SOS’ for persons to immediately donate blood, as it was noted that if a major disaster was to occur in the country, then the bank would not have had enough blood to cope with the situation.
Mangal says that the NBTS is no longer in a crisis situation, but she is still urging persons to voluntarily donate blood. If the blood is being constantly used, then it needs to be replenished, she said.
Mangal thanked the voluntary donors for being good Samaritans during the crisis situation. She was also grateful to the organizations that held blood drives during the severe shortage. She noted that the blood bank is always in need of blood, which has a ‘shelf life’.
She explained that the bank prefers mostly ‘O’ negative blood type, as this type can save anybody’s life.
The blood bank was in such a situation that it could not have even acquired its daily buffer of 144 units daily.
Kaieteur News was told that the severe shortage might have been as a result of the drop in voluntary donors, especially during the hosting of CARIFESTA X in Guyana.
Last July, Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy had noted that, over the past year, there were approximately 1000 first time donors, which established that the goal set by the Health Ministry to have 100 per cent voluntary donation by 2010 will be achieved.
