Whenever Freddie is not cussing out the government or harping over the President, whenever he turns his energy and attention to the excesses of power and the many instances of human rights violations in Guyana, whenever he takes up the plight of those whom he sees as victims, he is at his very best.
Few will disagree that he has been foremost in exposing a great many wrongs in this society. Few will disagree that his vigilance against the abuse of power is unmatched.
Despite the fact that the President of Guyana thinks that he is a fool – something that he should consider a compliment – he is still someone who the small man, those who are on the margins of society, those who the powers that be wish to push to those extremities, can rely on to come to their defence. In this regard he is brave and fearless, as always.
In yesterday’s edition of this newspaper he was at his best, doing what he is good at. He brought forward a tragic tale of a dentist who has suffered unnecessarily in Guyana and the question that remains unanswered is why did these things happen?
Why was the dentist’s license revoked? Was the complaint against him properly investigated? Was there a conflict of interest involved?
Was due process afforded the gentleman? Was there legitimacy in the revocation of the dentist’s work permit and visa? Well, the Courts have answered all of those questions.
However, what remains is what about the conduct of those who may have done wrongs things in this matter? What is going to happen to them? Are they simply going to be allowed to get away with their wrongful actions?
In any other part of the world, such a decision by the High Court would have forced persons to immediately tender their resignations.
Freddie asks about the many voices that should be raised in condemning what this dentist has had to endure. He is right in that respect, but he has also lived long enough in Guyana to appreciate that more often than not, voices are only raised when there are interests to be safeguarded.
And just how many of us care about safeguarding the interest of a man who may not be well-known or have the influence to cause mass protests in Guyana.
When it serves the political agenda of the opposition, they will raise their voices. I recall many years ago when a High Court decision exposed certain negative things about a PPP parliamentarian, the opposition were quick to jump on the matter and call for his removal.
Eventually, the man was forced to resign his seat in parliament. But do you think this is going to happen in the case of this ordinary dentist and especially considering who is involved in the matter.
No, there is not going to be any widespread condemnation of the injustice that has been meted out to this man. There is not going to be a squeak about the abuse of powers that took place in certain aspects of this matter.
And this is why despite the fact that Freddie can be downright annoying, he still remains a priceless member of the journalistic fraternity.
I do not expect there to be any uproar in the matter. I have long felt that people act mainly in their own interest. And in this case, not many people may feel that they have to attract attention to themselves by opposing the wrong that was done.
For me, I have long taken the position that it is my personal choices that will make a difference. I do not seek to impose these choices on others. But I make my own choices and I live by them.
I choose not to have anything at all to do with persons who do grievous wrong against others. I keep my distance. When I see those persons walking on one side of the road, I walk on the other side.
Unlike Freddie, I harbour no bitterness towards people who do wrong to others, just contempt. This is the choice I make.
This is my little contribution towards ensuring that those persons are isolated.
Whatever the rest of Guyana chooses to do, that is their business!
