Some two dozen pupils of the Redeemer Primary School, located at the corner of Stone Avenue and Pike Street, Campbellville, had their eyes tested as part of the observance of World Sight Day yesterday.
Through a programme streamlined by the Lionesses of the Demerara Lion’s Club, the Level Six pupils had their eyes examined by Dr Karen Persram free of charge at her Quamina Street office.
According to President of the Club, Ms Erena Persaud, each year the Lionesses would observe World Sight Day by selecting a particular school from which pupils are selected to have their eyesight tested.
She explained that a number of pupils had their eyes screened earlier this week, but those who were discovered to have eye problems were taken to Dr Persram to have their vision further evaluated.
She explained that the programme does not just stop short of testing the level of vision. The pupils will also be afforded spectacles, if necessary, to improve their eyesight.
And, according to Ms Persaud, Dr Persram has over the years been very instrumental in ensuring the sustenance of the programme.
She disclosed that the previous observance of World Sight Day saw the doctor giving several children spectacles.
The whole vision initiative, according to Chairperson of the Club’s Health and Sight Conservation programme, Ms Nazela Abdool, is in keeping with the Lion’s International venture called ‘Sight First Campaign Two’.
Ms Abdool pointed out that the primary intent of the campaign is to eradicate blindness, thus the local Lions Club has over the years been working with various schools to address the problem.
She explained that the vision of the Club is to help persons who are needy, and added that emphasis is placed on the young, who are the future of the country.
And through education and youth programmes, the young are particularly targeted, she added.
Efforts by the Demerara Lioness Club to help children with eye problems began in 1989, and according to the Lionesses, the venture will be sustained.
Plans are already in train for the Rama Krishna Primary, located on Middleton Street, to be screened next year.
