B.K. International Western Tigers clash with Santos in one of the games on the
under-card of the Plaisance Inter-Block Football final this Sunday is shaping up to be bigger that just a friendly fixture, judging from the war of words emanating from the respective camps.
A visit at the two teams’ practice sessions indicated that they both are taking the engagement seriously and this is evidenced by the early arrival of players for training and the commendable turnout witnessed yesterday as Kaieteur Sport paid visits to each team’s preparation facility.
Speaking with Western Tigers Club Secretary Dexter Cush, even though he refrained from making a prediction on the margin of victory, he, however, did forecast a win for his charges, while Santos’s President Frank ‘English’ Parris, who deputised for Coach Kavin Pearce said he would not be drawn into making bold pronouncements.
“All I will venture to say is that football is not a sport won by talking, but instead is won by the team that make the best of their chances.”
“Football is about creating chances and putting them away and is also one where on the given day, the team that can take advantage of their opponent’s weaknesses and score could turn out to be the likely winner,” Parris commented.
Tigers, a team that was relegated to the Division One League has been in terrific form throughout this season and they will once again be led by the prolific Devon Millington, a player with immense talent who has re-emerged after some lacklustre performances last year, and along with his strike partner national Edison Gomes could prove too formidable for the Santos backline.
They will need the delivery services of Phillip Rowley, Orin Pompey and Maxwell Pellew to create the chances.
The defence is just as solid with the likes of Delon Fraser, national Under-23 Sherman David, Odell Younge and Colin Nelson providing a sturdy shield for goalkeeper Travis Best.
Santos on the other hand, a team struggling to form a new nucleus of players after a mass exodus had done well enough to be promoted to the Premiership, but has since found the going extremely tough and at present find themselves one place from the bottom.
However, with the notion of respect on the line, they might be able to conjure up a determined effort and surprise their cocky opponents.
They have in their line-up former national Seon McKenzie, who it is anticipated will marshal the defence and his support will come from Dexter Arthur, Hillary Williams and Jermaine Fraser with O’Neil Haywood between the uprights.
The mid-field has some amount of potency with newly named national Chris Camacho, Renault Fraser, Quacy Price and Asagai Clarke, all competent players, while the experienced duo of Michael Oie and Michael Pedro along with Berbician Adrian Adams tasked with tormenting the Tigers fortress.
The other game on the under-card is between Georgetown All Stars and Hearts of Oak in a veteran encounter.
The final is between Front Side and Goedverwagting for the title and according to Co-ordinator Parliamentary Secretary attached to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steve Ninvalle, the winning team will take home $50,000 and a trophy.
