Defending champions Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) began their national 20/20
title defence inauspiciously when they crashed to a three-wicket win against arch rivals DCC, while Everest and GNIC also registered victories when the Demerara zone of the Gafson’s national 20/20 first division cricket competition began yesterday.
Skipper Steven Jacobs hit 32 from 29 balls at the top of the order but only former first-class player Neil Barry with an unbeaten 24 of the other batsmen offered any real resistance in a disappointing batting performance on a good track as MSC fell for 94 in 19.5 overs.
The MSC trio of national batsmen Shemroy Barrington (4), Orin Forde (9) and Deon Ferrier (1) all fell cheaply before Barry’s innings towards the end gave the MSC at least ‘something’ to work with in good conditions.
Former Guyana off-spinner and Demerara under-17 coach Garvin Nedd grabbed 3-17 while Essequibo Skipper and national pacer Trevon Garraway was again impressive with 3-18 for DCC who struggled to 95-7 and victory with an edged double off the last ball of the penultimate over.
National 20/20 all-rounder Chris Barnwell continued his good form with two sixes and a four and along with national left-hander opener Trevon Griffith who hit a six and a four in his 20, added 32 for DCC in five overs before Griffith was caught behind by Delroy Jacobs off former national under-19 off-spinner Sean Devers, playing in his first Division One game in over five years.
Jacobs (0-13) who bowled three consecutive maiden overs in his four over spell opening the bowling with Daniels, kept the usually aggressive Barnwell in check but once Barnwell, who seemed very unlucky to be given out leg before to left a-arm spinner Damien Vantull and Derwin Christian (9) had his middle stump knocked out by Guyana under-17 selectee Seon Daniels, the home side, watched by a good size and vocal crowd, lost their way briefly before eventually prevailing as Denis Squires contributed an important 13.
Vantull, bowling with an injured right shoulder, was very impressive and finished with 2-10 from his four overs while Daniels had 2-28.
Devers who was brought into the attack in the third over after an expensive start from Daniels, took the other wicket to fall to bowlers, while two batsmen were run as DCC stuttered against a spirited MSC side as they chased the small total.
At Everest, Former West Indies Test opener Ryan Ramdass scored 55 and added 83 for the first wicket with West Indies under-19 player Rajendra Chandrika (39) before Ramdass was taken at mid-wicket off Shawn Massiah to lead Everest to 126-3 in 17.2 overs chasing the 125-5 made by Transport Sports Club (TSC).
Travis Blyden and former Guyana under-15 player Carlos La Rose had a wicket each for TSC, who were spearheaded by attractive batting from former Guyana under-19 player Kelon Carmichael, who shrugged off the disappointment of his surprise omission from the 42 called up for Guyana first-class preparation or the 22 invited for the one-day training squad, by hitting five fours and a six in his even fifty while Keno Alphonso supported with 31. Demerara Left-arm spinner and former Guyana under-19 captain Sauid Drepaul took -3-22 for Everest.
And at MSC, an undefeated 70 from Martin Rajmangal and 20 from Guyana under-17 selectee Quency Ovid Richardson gave GNIC a 70-run opening start as they reached 115-1 in 18.1 overs replying to Police’s 114-9 in 20 overs.
Troy Benn top scored with 35 for the Cops as Mark Montfort and former West Indies off-spinner Clyde Butts took three wickets each in a winning effort.
