Led by a fluent 76 from national batsman Gajanand Singh and 6-17 from pacer Devendra Ramoutar, Young Warriors demolished West Berbice by 158 runs at Cumberland to advance to the Berbice semis of the Neal & Massey National first division 40-overs cricket competition.
Singh, a former West Indies under-19 left-hander, stroked 10 fours in his innings as Young Warriors recovered from 37-4 to reach 203 all out in 34.2 overs.
Ramoutar, a former Berbice under-19 left-am pacer then demolished West Berbice for 45 in the lop-sided contest.
Young Warriors’ Group A win pushed them to 12 points with one match to play (level with West Berbice who have completed their matches) and two points behind leaders Bermine.
Warriors by virtue of them beating West Berbice in their head-to-head clash, will advance with Bermine, Port Mourant and Albion Community Centre.
National under-19 pacer Keyron Fraser and former Berbice under-17 player Asif Khan reduced the Warriors to 37- 4 after they had opted to bat first before Singh, who celebrated his 21st birthday last Friday, and Berbice all-rounder Paul Wintz (46) added 87 for the fifth wicket to get their team back on course.
A 60-run partnership between Singh, who scored 36 runs from two first class matches this year, and his brother Ishwar Singh (25) ensured the hosts passed the 200-run mark.
Bowling for West Berbice, off spinner Dennis Webster had 3-21, ex-Berbice under-15 pacer Ron Johnson 3-25 and Fraser 2-15.
West Berbice were soon wobbling on the ropes on 0-3 in two overs as Ramoutar and Wintz went to work. Ramoutar, in a destructive second over, snatched three more scalps to leave the Region Five team precariously placed on 8-6.
Ramoutar continued his carnage and in his third over struck again as West Brbice catapulted to an embarrassing 15-7. Krishnadat Ramoo (9) and Keno Gravesande (9) offered token resistance with an 18-run stand before the innings ended after 18.4 overs.
Young Warriors’ final group B match is against bottom of the table Blairmont Community Centre at Cumberland and is fixed for Saturday.
A victory in that game would leave Young Warriors as the zone winners while a rained out match will see them advance to the semis as group runners-up.
