DEAR EDITOR,
Being a second year University of Guyana (UG) student, I wish to highlight my disgust with the present asbestos removal process at the Turkeyen campus.
The removal process began some three and a half months ago, and is still to be completed.
We the students of the university would prefer it to reopen as soon as possible, preferably by the end of this month and no later. As recently as today (08-10-08), I heard, on the hourly news that is broadcast on the radio, the UGSS president say, the university will most likely reopen in January.
Let me reiterate my total disappointment and frustration with this remark. I am not the only person sharing these sentiments, since, all my fellow colleagues agree with me.
Mr. President, the students of the university will not and cannot accept a start of the new academic year in January. This is so for several reasons, the main being that this will put us, the students, under immense pressure since there will be no semester holiday.
This administration would want to make up for the time lost and would most likely grant no semester holiday. Not only would students be affected but the lecturers will suffer too, since there will be more work to do in an inadequate amount of time.
The holiday is usually provided so that the lecturers can assess the students’ performance through exams for the past semester. Without this time, the lecturers will not be able to fully dedicate themselves to the second semester, thus depriving students of valuable attention.
Mr. President, can you tell me why the semester cannot begin by the end of this month, as previously announced by you in the Monday September 29 edition of Kaieteur News?
Is it because the asbestos fibres are still in the air? Well, it has been one month since the actual removal process was completed.
So tell me, will the air ever be free of the fibres? The UG website announced that registration will begin as soon as the campus is declared safe to inhabit, while classes will begin three weeks after. Certainly three weeks is too long.
I propose a simple solution to decrease that time; commence registration now, and do not wait until the campus can be reoccupied.
This will certainly save more than a week in waiting time, hence resulting in a faster start of classes.
Mr. President, you are our voices in this matter and we encourage you to relay our frustration to the Asbestos Removal Committee. We would like the university to reopen as early as possible, surely before January.
Stop promising us dates for the reopening of UG which you fail to deliver on and get the job done. If this cannot be met, then arrangements should be made to have classes at other venues so that the semester can begin.
