Following a meeting with the residents of Stevedore Housing Scheme, City Mayor Hamilton Green, accompanied by representatives of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), yesterday took a walk through the scheme where work to rectify drainage and sewerage problems will begin today.
The meeting, which was held the night before, brought to the attention of the Mayor the apparent indifference which the municipality and GWI paid to the area. According to Green, the work which will commence from today is aimed at securing the integrity of the drainage and sewerage systems of the area, and in doing so, enhancing the environs.
Green further noted that the complaints voiced by the residents were valid. He highlighted the fact that in spite of financial constraints which the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) presently face, persons should not have to live in such conditions.
One of the GWI engineers sought to clarify that the drainage and sewerage problems were not to be entirely blamed on GWI. According to the engineer, the overgrown bushes and foliage hampered access to the drains, making their task exceedingly difficult.
The M&CC will apparently clear the drains of the bushes, thus providing GWI access to the affected areas.
An elderly resident recalled that for as long as he could remember, there have been irregularities with the sewerage system. He said that oftentimes when toilets are flushed, the poor sewerage system causes the contents to overflow.
The residents also raised concerns over the lack of street lights and the poor state of the roadways in the area. The Mayor pointed out that due to the financial limitations of the M&CC, the most important need would be addressed first – the sewerage and drainage.
He said that the situation of the roadways would be looked into at a later date and noted that if the residents could purchase the street lamps, then the M&CC would install them.
