EAST LOTHIAN, CORENTYNE – Police in Berbice are trying to ascertain the identity of a decomposed body found in a canal at Number Thirty-three East Lothian (Number Nineteen Corentyne Highway).
The body was reportedly first seen on Tuesday but was fished out of the waterway yesterday morning.
The corpse was lying face down in the canal, clad in a blue vest and a pair of blue three-quarter denim pants.
The deceased appeared to have been of African descent, small built, of fair complexion and may have been in his 20s or 30s. There were two bumps to the back of the head.
On Wednesday, 14-year-old Alfred David, of Number One Road, Corentyne, said that he was out grazing cattle on Tuesday about 17:00 hours and he saw the body, “Me tell ah man and we look but they ain’t do nothing.”
Older persons on the scene said that nightfall was approaching on Tuesday and added to that there was a power outage in the area so no report was made to the police.
A resident of Gibraltar, about half a mile away, who preferred to remain anonymous, said she was out for her usual morning walk when she saw the body in the canal.
She raised an alarm and as persons gathered, ranks at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam were informed. Some persons related that the body was in the canal since Saturday.
Sometime after 10:00 hours, yesterday, employees of a private funeral parlour in New Amsterdam removed the body. (Melissa Johnson)
