DEAR EDITOR,
I found it strange that on October 5th (World Teachers’ Day) no one at the executive level of the Guyana Teachers’ Union took the time to wish teachers all the best and to congratulate them for their contribution to the society in the print media. This is unacceptable and a slap in the face of all teachers.
How is it that the body which is tasked with the responsibility of representing and speaking on our behalf could not find the time to say thank you? When Mr. Philip Roberts was the General Secretary, this never happened.
There was one article (Kaieteur News: Teachers will receive Whitley Council money only when eligible 2008-10-05) which made the point that the issue regarding non-payment of allowances to teachers who were eligible was in fact a non-issue and was not an attempt to breach the salary agreement which was signed in 2006.
The article went on to state that the union had agreed with the Ministry to pay teachers when they become eligible.
This issue is a minor one when compared with all the problems teachers face and I would urge that more attention and focus be placed on having a proper agreement done for 2009 when the present agreement comes up for review.
I hope that we will be treated with more respect and that we will be consulted before anything is put forward to the Ministry of Education for consideration.
I hope also that there will be the abandonment of the GTU’s policy to suspend and deny those of us who would constructively criticise a proper hearing.
