Three men relieved an Israeli businessman who arrived in Guyana from Suriname of a quantity of foreign currency and his personal belongings. The three had offered to take the Israeli to neighbouring Venezuela.
The victim, Amos Sabag, 53, a dealer in precious metal, was relieved of $US700; 280 Euros; 200 pounds sterling; a suitcase with clothing; a laptop, and two credit cards. The incident occurred at around 07:00 hours on Sunday.
Reports stated that Sabag arrived in Guyana from Suriname through Springlands en route to Venezuela on Sunday.
He boarded a minibus and came to Georgetown where he sought directions to Venezuela. Sensing that he was a stranger and was easy prey, three young men in a car offered to take him to his destination.
Trusting the men, the Israeli businessman took up the offer. But instead of taking him to Venezuela, the men took the businessman to the seawall where they relieved him of everything he had, then put him out of the vehicle.
Sabag wandered around the city for a while until he finally managed to make his way to State House on Main Street where he reported the matter at around 20:00 hours.
However, police say they have not yet been able to take a statement since the Israeli does not speak even passable English. No one has so far been arrested.
