A huge backlog of cases has forced the magistracy to increase the number of court days at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
The court is presently operating five days a week and, according to a source, this is to facilitate the clearing up of more than 100 cases that are presently engaging that particular court under Magistrate Yohanseh Cave.
There are several high profile matters being conducted at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, including the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the slaying of former Agriculture Minister Satyadeow Sawh, his siblings and security guard.
But the source said that there are other cases that were completed by a previous Magistrate which have to be done all over again.
One such case is the Pi into a murder allegedly committed by Surujnarine Jaikarran, which initially commenced over six years ago.
Jaikarran was previously committed to stand trial in the High Court but because of a motion filed by his attorney, the PI has to be done all over.
This, according to the source, could pose a problem since many of the witnesses are unavailable.
The East Coast Demerara Magistrates’ Courts have been inundated with a number of matters which arose out of the crime wave of 2001 to present.
And given the increase in the jurisdiction having to take in new housing areas like a certain section of Sophia and Cummings Lodge, the Magistrate’s Court at Sparendaam was overwhelmed given the fact that it only operated three days a week previously-Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
At Vigilance, which had a significant majority of cases since it is in the Buxton/Friendship district, court is being held two days a week – Thursdays and Fridays – under Magistrate Sherdell Issacs-Marcus.
The same magistrate presides at Cove and John on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while Magistrate Ramdhani presides at Mahaica on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as at Mahaicony on Mondays.
