Investigations into an armed robbery early yesterday morning led to the recovery of an unlicensed .22 Beretta pistol at an Albouystown house.
The weapon was found in one of three bedrooms at a house at 138 King Edward Street, where police conducted a search after being led there by the victim.
According to Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Leroy Brummel, the victim reported to police that he was riding his bicycle when a known man pulled him down and relieved him of $60,000.
He then took police to the house where the search was conducted.
At the time of the search, the house was occupied by five men and a woman, who were all taken into custody.
And later yesterday afternoon, the police reportedly traded gunshots with the suspect.
Information received by this newspaper stated that the suspect was spotted in the Le Repentir Cemetery by ranks on a police mobile patrol.
The ranks claimed that upon seeing them, the suspect discharged a few rounds in their direction, forcing them to take cover.
They managed to return fire but the suspect made good his escape.
“I hear a one shot first and then rapid shots,” a source in the area told this newspaper.
And in Berbice, police have detained a man and a woman following the discovery of a .38 Taurus revolver at a house at Bel Air, West Coast Berbice.
Commander of the Division, Assistant Commissioner Khrishna Lakeraj, told Kaieteur News that the police, acting on information, went to the house and conducted a search that resulted in the weapon being found beneath the floor.
The occupants of the house have both denied knowledge of the weapon.
Commander Lakeraj told this newspaper that part of the weapon is rusted and the serial number is not too visible.
He stated that ballistics tests are being carried out on the weapon to determine if it was used in the commission of any crime.
Charges are likely soon.
