The Monty Lynch X1 Invitational side of England opened their brief Goodwill tour of Guyana on a massive note when they hammered the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport (MCY&S) by 109 runs at the Carifesta Sports Complex ground yesterday in a 35-over match.
Leading the visitors to victory was guest player and man-of-the-match Andre Percival who slammed a belligerent 78 spiced up with 8 exquisitely timed fours and 4 massive sixes. He also took one wicket.
Percival’s onslaught, which included back to back sixes out of the ground, resulted in three of the balls having to be replaced.
Martin Jean-Jacques, a former Derbyshire and Hampshire player who opened the bowling at Derbyshire in 1986 with West Indian great Michael Holding, showed that he still has lost left in the tank with a classy innings of 69 which contained six fours and two sixes.
Percival and Jean-Jacques featured in a 5th wicket partnership of 150 which effectively took the match away from the MCY&S who had grabbed 3 early wickets for 23 runs after the Monty Lynch side won the toss and elected to bat.
The 5th wicket stand between two veterans, took the game to another level as the two batsmen used their experience to dig in, in very humid conditions.
When they got their sight in, shots went to every part of the ground and outside also as they carried their side to an unbeatable position against the young MCY&S side.
Jean-Jacques who is no longer a bowler due to a knee cap injury surely showed that he can be quite as devastating with the bat also.
When he was eventually out, bowled for 69 with the score on 181-5, himself and Percival who followed soon for 78, 2 runs later, they had already laid a solid foundation for their team.
Alim Khan provided a little late cameo of 14 not out as the visitors ended on a challenging 205-8 off their 35 overs. The leading bowlers for the Sports Ministry were Nikita Lawson with 3-20 and Sherwin Vincent known for his football exploits with Premier League side Alpha United, grabbing 2-45.
When it came to the MCY&S turn at the crease, they were never allowed to get going as wickets fell at regular intervals and after 22.3 overs, it was all over for the host team.
Only Kenroy Joseph with a solid 40 made up of five fours and a solitary six offered any real resistance with the bat. Rodrigues McCalman made 16.
Doing the damage with the ball was former national player Rabindranauth Seeram who spun out three batsmen for a mere 7 runs off just 1.3 overs.
Also cashing in were Amir Mahmood with 3-25 from 6 overs and opening pacer Hugh Williams who started the steady slide with 2-23 at the top of the innings. Percival, with his gentle medium pace captured 1-6 off 5 overs.
Before the start of the match, the Honorable Minister of culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony along with Permanent Secretary Keith Booker met the two teams and offered brief remarks.
The visitors will be playing their second match of their tour against a Splashmin’s select side today from 13:00hrs at the Splashmin’s Fun Park, Linden Soesdyke Highway.
Their final match is set for Friday evening under lights against Banks DIH at Thirst Park.
