The Guyana Lands and Survey Commission has launched an investigation into the sale of the house and land at Lot 40 Parika, East Bank Essequibo. The house and land were occupied by 61-year-old Naimoon Neisha.
Commissioner of Lands and Survey, Andrew Bishop, told Kaieteur News that a report on the matter will be submitted to him on Thursday, where the facts of the matter will be clarified.
He indicated that he is very surprised that someone’s house and land would be sold by the commission, especially as he explained that it is not the role of the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission to sell people’s property.
Kaieteur News was told that although Neisha is not the rightful owner of the land, she and her family had been living there for more than 40 years now.
However, when her husband died, the woman migrated to Venezuela, and left the house which she built in the care of one of her relatives.
During her 15 years away from Guyana, Neisha told this newspaper that she frequented the country on a regular basis, and would stay at the house whenever she returned.
Kaieteur News understands that the community was once a squatting area, and recently became regularized. This newspaper was also told that the land is in the name of one Keith Daniels, and that he sold it to a businessman in Essequibo for some $2 million.
At the time that the land was sold, Neisha was not in Guyana and returned in September of this year, and found out that she now has no where to live.
She claimed that she applied for possession of the land in 1995 but was never granted ownership.
Despite this, the woman still went ahead and built her house on the property. On Monday last, she found that her house was demolished, and she is now seeking compensation from the purchasers of the land.
In this regard, she explained that she was informed by persons from within the community that Daniels is willing to pay her $300,000 and buy her a lot in compensation for the house that she has lost.
Neisha explained that she has never been officially approached by Daniels on the matter, and she does not know what he intends to do about the situation.
However, she did note that if he is to make that specific offer to her then she would not accept it, since according to her she spent more than $300,000 to construct her house.
