…More tainted products found at local markets
The two importers of the dairy products said to be contaminated with the deadly melamine are denying that they imported the items in the country.
A reliable source from within the Ministry of Health has since informed this newspaper that the importers of the dairy product, ‘Milky Evaporated Milk’ will have to face the consequences for illegally importing the items in Guyana.
The importers are at present collaborating with the inspectors of the Government Food and Drug Analyst Department to identify the vendors to whom the products were sold.
According to the source, the Ministry of Health is considering confiscating all the goods belonging to the importers and will involve the police force along with the Customs and Trade Administration, since the importers were not registered with the Government Food and Drug Analyst Department.
Intelligence gathered by the Ministry found that the products were imported through Suriname.
Meanwhile, some vendors of the Parika Market on the East Bank of Essequibo have informed this newspaper that even as the news broke about melamine in dairy products, ‘Milky Evaporated Milk’ was being sold on a large scale at the Parika Market as recent as Sunday last.
Vendors noted that they were not aware that the milk is contaminated, but what they did know is that it was being sold very cheap—two tins of the milk were sold for $300.
The Food and Drug Analyst Department is currently engaged in an intensive search in all supermarkets for any milk product that originates from China.
Persons are being urged by the Ministry of Health not to use any such dairy product which was made in that country.
The department is of the opinion the item is being sold mostly in the municipal markets, and small shops around communities.
The department is calling on vendors who are in possession of the product to immediately make contact with the department and not to continue selling it to consumers, as it can have a deadly effect.
Melamine is an artificial chemical used in a variety of industrial applications, including the production of resins and foams, cleaning products, plastic products, fertilizers and pesticides. It is not naturally occurring and it is not allowed in food.
However, melamine added to milk has the effect of causing milk to falsely appear to have more protein.
